Virtual exchange connects learners across countries and cultures without requiring anyone to travel. You can use it to help students build intercultural competence as a core part of your disciplinary teaching — not as an add-on course bolted onto the syllabus.

Keep three reasons in mind as you consider whether VE belongs in your own teaching:

1. Your learners need to build competencies for working across intercultural and language lines.
2. Global challenges — such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals — require cross-border collaboration.
3. The world is becoming more polarized, which makes these skills increasingly essential, not optional.

VE is also an accessibility win: it opens global learning to students with disabilities, work/life constraints, or limited ability to travel. The trade-off is that it depends on reliable bandwidth, technology, and electricity, which can be real barriers in some contexts — worth naming honestly rather than glossing over.
