Design with research in mind. Move beyond simple end-of-course evaluations by embedding research into your course design from the outset. This strengthens both learning and assessment while generating evidence that can contribute to the virtual exchange literature.
Plan for research ethics. If your students will be participating as human research subjects, obtain approval from your institutional review board (IRB) or equivalent research ethics committee before collecting data, particularly if you intend to publish your findings.
Take a team approach. Instructional designers, librarians, educational researchers, and learning technology staff are valuable partners. They can help design robust data collection processes, including structured survey instruments (e.g., Qualtrics) and data management workflows that facilitate analysis.
Use AI to support qualitative analysis. AI-assisted thematic analysis is emerging as an accessible way to organize and analyze large volumes of student reflections, making qualitative research more manageable while still requiring researcher oversight and interpretation.
Partner with students as researchers. Consider involving learners as co-authors or research collaborators where appropriate. Begin with low-stakes activities in the first week to help students build confidence and develop the skills needed to contribute meaningfully.
